My titles include teacher, pastor’s wife, mom, foster mom, coach, among many others. I’ve always felt the tug to be a teacher, but I never really knew what I wanted to teach, and I felt like I had too much spirit in me just to teach. My interests have always extended over a great range, yet I somehow still became a teacher. Fortunately, I love it! However, I’m always looking for new ways to reach not only students but other people, and although English encompasses a vast variety of concepts to teach, I often find myself thinking of so much more than a classroom will allow me from year to year.
I’ve been surrounded by critical thinkers for years, the first being my younger brother. He asked questions and pondered concepts that I knew would never reveal answers in our brief philosophical conversations, yet I found myself instantly enveloped in the hypotheticals, self-reflections, and possibilities that spirited my curiosity.
I’m grateful for those discussions because it allowed me to embrace the freedom that comes with being fully available in communication with others including students, colleagues, employers, and yes, even my husband. Proverbs 23:4 tells us to guard our hearts, but we can’t block out the world in doing so. It’s so important for us to have community, share our stories, and even be vulnerable to those we’ve entrusted into our inner circle of people.
My hope in writing, teaching, coaching, and even simply talking to people is to share enough of my testimony, ask enough questions, and even make people, including myself, just uncomfortable enough that we see Jesus in all the chaos of life.
